PRESS RELEASE

With a view to encourage the excellence in the colleges, the UGC has introduced a Scheme during the X Plan period entitled “Colleges with Potential for Excellence” (CPE).

In the first round, 47 colleges were selected. In the second round, applications are invited from the colleges wherever the slots are vacant. The enclosed sheet gives the details about the quota fixed for each State, slots consumed during the first round and balance slots available. The quota was fixed for each State taking into account the total number of colleges including under Section 12B of the UGC Act. Based on the experience in selecting their colleges in first round and the feed back received, the Proforma has been thoroughly revised for the second round of selection.

As was done earlier, the first level of selection is to be done with the help of a Screening Committee to be appointed by the Vice-Chancellor of a university. The Screening Committee has to recommend only six colleges in a university to UGC. Only Arts, Science, Commerce and Education colleges are to be considered for selection and no professional colleges are to be considered. The Screening Committee should also make an on-site inspection of the recommended colleges and vouch for the data provided by the colleges in the Proforma. The Screening Committee is expected to give a Certificate to the effect that all the data provided by the colleges are true.

At the second level of screening, the selection will be made by the UGC with the help of the Standing Committee on CPE constituted for this purpose. The Vice-Chancellors have been requested to forward the names of the shortlisted colleges along with the proposals to UGC on or before 11th February, 2005. All the necessary information are available at UGC website www.ugc.ac.in. For further information the colleges may be asked to contact Dr. K. Gunasekaran, Joint Secretary, University Grants Commission, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi – 110 001 Tel. No. 011-23230405 Fax.011-23231055 E.mail- gunasekaran@ugc.ac.in
