Recognition: Established in 1821, the Deccan College become a Post-Graduate Research Institute in1939 and Deemed University from 1994. The Department of Archaeology has been recongnized by the Centre of Advanced Study since 1972. The Department of Linguistics is the first of its kind established in Indian Universities and was recognized by the UGC from 1965-1975. The Institute has an ongoing Lexico graphical project aimed at the preparation of An Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Snaskrit On Historical Principles. The Institute has been awarded B++ Grade in March 2003 by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

Other Details: The Deccan College, started as Hindoo College on 6th October 1821, is one of the three oldest educational institutions in India. It was renamed as Deccan College and was shifted to the present campus near Yerwada, in 1864. Various distinguished personalities such as Sir. R. G. Bhandarkar, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gurudeo R.D Ranade were associated with the Deccan College either as faculty or as students. The research carried out by the Institute in Archaeology and Linguistics is of all India character and it has result in the publication of over 220 books, monographs and reports. During the last sixty five years nearly 200 Ph.D dissertations in Archaeology and 150 dissertations in Linguistics were completed. The Institute enrolled for its various courses students not only from various parts of the country but also from other parts of South -Asia and other countries as also from various countries in Europe and North America.

Other Ameneties: The Institute has two hostels for boys and one hostel for girls. The Academic Section provides advice and guidance to the foreign students in various matters pertaining to their admission, study and stay at the Institute.

Co-curricular Activities: The Gymkhana of the Institute, besides providing facilities for indoor and outdoor games, also provides opportunities to students to take part in cultural and recreational activities.

Student Support Services: Besides having two Canteens on the campus, the Institute has a co-operative Student’s Mess which provides food to both the Indian and foreign students.
